La Cite, Carcassonne's UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site, is an
atmospheric medieval walled
city on the banks of the Aude. Restaurants and shops are
scattered among a
wealth of winding cobbled streets, turrets and towers. On the other side
of the Aude,
the Ville Basse offers all the charms of a French country town, complete
with a Saturday market.
There are many shops to suit all tastes and pockets. Place Carnot with
its many cafes is an
ideal place to have a glass of wine, a coffee, or, maybe, a meal.
Carcassonne has three markets
each week and there are many village markets a short drive away.
